Engaging Students through Instagram.
Technology plays many roles in my teaching style. Videos and simulations have the ability to transport students in sitting in a large lecture hall underwater, in a tropical rainforest, or viewing microscopic interactions with ease. While my preferred style is to have each student be able to personally experience these, there are obvious limiting factors. With technology, these videos and simulations are the next best thing. Technology also serves as platform to cater to various learning-styles through in-class activities and providing additional supplementary material in conjunction with my lectures.
One of my favorite parts of the learning process is making connections with personal experiences and having that "ah-ha" moment. This Instagram account (@environmentalinspiration) is dedicated to just that. Students submit photos of examples they saw in their everyday life which relates to a topic we talked about during my Introduction to Environmental Science course for non-majors.
